Mahakala (Tib. Gonpo, "Great Black One") is the most important among the many dharma-protectors mentioned in the vajrayana texts. He is a wisdom-protector and thus considered to be completely reliable and only assuming a wrathful or fearsome appearance for the benefit of beings. As such, connecting to the energy of Mahakala can protect us from both external and inner obstacles.
